Kingston, Jamaica

On August 7th, Everton and I will begin our journey through Kington, Jamaica.

While in Kingston, we will work with Youth Crime Watch, an organization that works with the youth of Kingston, to help them to leave the world of gangs and violence to become independent empowered and self-sufficient entreprenuers.

As two teachers from NYC, we have seen what gangs can do to our youth. We have also seen the tremendous impact of an education, of self-empowerment, and of leadership in the community.

We hope to gain a great deal from our time in Kingston.

This is something that we have been dreaming about for years!

Profiles about our Partners at the University of West Indies, Mona

K’adamawe A. H. N. K’nIfe is a lecturer and a researcher at the University of West Indies, Mona in the Department of Management Studies. K’adamawe holds a PhD is Sustainable Development from the University of the West Indies and leads the research in the field of Entrepreneurship and Strategic Planning with the Institute of Sustainable Development UWI. Dr. K’nIfe has written and presented numerous academic papers on a wide range of subject areas and has introduced a number of courses on Entrepreneurship and New Venture generally but more specifically, Social Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management Studies at the UWI.

Sanjae Blair is currently a final year student in the Department of Economic at UWI Mona. He is a student member and a volunteer at the Centre for Caribbean Thought and has worked as an organizer and logistic coordinator on numerous projects and events associated with the university. He is also mobilizer for the Marcus Garvey Movement and leads its community outreach programmes in Rose Town and August Town.

Edward Dixon recently completed an 18-month internship in Social Work at the Children’s Village in New York. He holds BSc. in International Relations with options in Public Sector Management, from the University of the West Indies and is currently pursuing a certificate in Project Management for Development Practitioners. Edward has worked in the Youth Development field for the last 4 ½ years and has gained both local and international experience in issues relating to youth development, crime and developing sustainable approaches to combating these issues. He has worked with agencies such as NHT (Inner-city Housing Project) and the Ministry of National Security (Citizen’s Security and Justice Project) and has strong interest in social research and social policy.

Allan Bernard is a research consultant in the field of Youth and Community development specializing in crime and violence prevention. He is the deputy director of the Flanker Peace and Justice Centre and manages its youth and gang prevention programmes. Allan is also the present national chairman for the Youth Crime Watch of Jamaica and works closely with various local and foreign agencies on related projects. Allan Bernard has organized and lead many national and international conference in the related field and has written and presented numerous academic papers accordingly.
